Sisterhood of the Travelling Pig

Dear readers

Following the end of the school term, the lease in our apartment will expire. This will mark our first relocation with Flora.

A lot of the apartments we've been looking at seem to not allow pets, though I'm not sure this applies to cage pets like guinea pigs.

I'm hoping Flora won't be a turn-off to landlords, because she really is very quiet and not messy at all. Have you ever experienced problems finding a place to live that allowed your pet? Hopefully our experience will not be too complicated.

Yours truly

Sarah

  1. My room mate had a hedgehog and was unable to bring it to our house because of a no pet policy. As long as there aren't any allergies in the vacinity of Flora, I don't think you will have any problems.

  2. My cousin used to have a guinea pig when I was a kid. I was fascinated by it. They are overgrown hamsters. So cute.

I think a lot of landlord's should not be allowed to not allow pets, just set up certain restrictions. I remember trying to find an apartment with two cats a few years back. Needless to say, it was a bit difficult.

My advice would be to just forget to mention it. It's a little guinea pig, they probably won't even notice it. They would not evict you if they found out later.

    Good luck.

  3. Sadly we had to give our dog Yukon to a family member to watch while we were living in Boston. It is nearly impossible to find an apartment in Boston that allows pets that doesn't charge a fortune for large dogs.

    The math went like this:
Our dog weighed 95 lbs so that is 45 lbs over the 50 lb flat rate. The charge for a dog over 50 lbs was $50 dollars. You were then charged $1 a lb for every pound over the 50 lb wieght. That's right. He would cost us $95.00 a month in rent on top of the fact that he would have to be crated while we were out of the apartment.

Needless to say we gave him to my brother-in-law who has a huge backyard and really loved Yukon. (Yukon is a lab sharpei mix and is eight years old)

  4. I think you should be ok with a small caged pet. When I first came back from Calgary and had my dog with me I found it nearly impossible to find a place that would allow me to bring her with me. I found two places in Thorold and neither was that great, but beggars can't be choosers. I think you will be fine with your lil guinea pig. Does it make cute little noises? What is the bark of a guinea pig called?
